DISCOVERING YOUR PURPOSE

Do you ever wonder what your purpose on earth is? Do you every wonder why you exist? Do you sometimes think about if life has meaning? The reason you wonder if your life has any meaning and purpose is because your life does have purpose and you are trying to discover what it is. You realize there is something inside you yearning for something more to life than just living and dying.

Whatever we see that was created by another person has purpose. A chair has purpose. A computer has purpose. A cell phone has purpose. An airplane has purpose. An automobile has purpose. There is a reason for their existence. The inventor of a chair, computer, cell phone, airplane, and automobile, along with everything else that was invented, was invented for a purpose. None of these are here by accident. There is a specific design to and reason for their existence. There is a reason for your existence, too.

You are not on earth by accident. You were created by a God who loves you! God created you for a purpose. There is a reason for your existence. Because you are loved and created by God, your life has meaning.

The creator or inventor of something is what gives meaning to what was created or invented. Overtime, and with great thought, wisdom, and enjoyment, an inventor develops something for a specific purpose. In the same way, God delighted in creating you. He created you for a specific purpose...to experience his love and express his love to others. Your purpose is to know God. Knowing God is your purpose in life. Knowing God is the reason you were created. It is the reason you exist!

You may ask, "But how can I know God?" "How can I experience his love?" Good questions! The way you know God and experience his love is to first know how much he loves you. God is love. He created you to love you.Your ability to love God comes from understanding how much he loves you. And how much does he love you? He loves you so much that he stepped out of heaven to earth as Jesus Christ to pay your sin debt and bring you into a relationship with himself!

"But what is sin?" you may ask. Sin is breaking God's laws...the ten commandments. We all have broken God's laws. We all have disobeyed God intentionally or unintentionally in our lives. Whenever a law is broken, there is a penalty or punishment attached to it. For example, when someone exceeds the speed limit, that person has broken a law. There is a penalty for speeding. The same is true with God's laws. The penalty for sin, or breaking God's laws, is death... or spiritual and eternal separation from God. It is sin preventing us from being in and enjoying a relationship with God.

Yet, God loved us so much, that he stepped out of heaven to earth as Jesus to pay our sin debt. That is love! Rather than each of us paying our own sin debt through spiritual and eternal death, he died in our place. God just doesn't tell us how much he loves us, he shows us!

You see, we are powerless to save ourselves from our own sin, just as a drowning person is powerless to save himself. But what we were powerless to do, God did! Jesus went to the cross and died for us! For you! He paid the sin penalty for all of our sins, for all people, for all time. And three days later, he arose from the dead! Now, the sin once separating us from God has been paid for and removed.

God waits patiently for each of us to receive what he has done. We receive what he has done placing our faith in Jesus or simply trusting in what he has done. We admit to God that we have sinned or broken his laws by disobeying what he wanted us to do, either intentionally or unintentionally. We acknowledge the penalty for sin is death and that Jesus paid our sin penalty through his death on the cross. Next, we accept God's free offer of forgiveness of all our sins by believing in Jesus payment for our sin and his resurrection. Finally, we ask Jesus himself to come live inside us by his Spirit and to lead us in life.

One way of placing your faith in Jesus is through prayer. You can say this prayer as a way to place your faith in Jesus.

Jesus, I admit I have sinned. Thank you for paying the penalty for my sin through your death on the cross. I accept your payment. Thank you for fully forgiving me of all my sins forever. Because you arose from the dead, I ask you to come live in me heart and lead me in life.I want to know and follow you.

By placing your faith in Jesus, you have become a child of God. A dearly loved child of God! That is who you are now, a dearly loved child of God! Your life now has meaning...both for this life and the life to come. You no longer have to wonder if your life has purpose. You have discovered your purpose!

Now that you have discovered your purpose, get to know God. He desires to know you personally and help you become all he created you to be. Grow in his love and grace. Learn more about him by reading the Bible and attending a good church in your community. Ask some of your friends if they would recommend a church to you.
