Peace on earth...that is what we long for. We long for peace in our homes, neighborhoods, villages, cities, states, countries, and world. Newspaper headlines and television news stories reflect the chaos happening all over the world. Throughout the world, violence and death have become the norm. Fear grips the hearts of most, leaving us longing for peace and asking, “Will there ever be peace on earth?”
God longs for peace, too.
God has a plan for peace.
God, in Isaiah 9:6-7, promised a male child would come from the nation of Israel, from the family line of King David to bring peace to the world. This child will be a King who will rule the nations, and under his rule there will be unending, eternal peace.
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.
Concerning this King and the peace he will bring, Zechariah 9:9-19 and 12:9 says,
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem. See, your king comes to you, righteous and having salvation, gentle and riding on a colt, the foal of a donkey. I will take away the chariots from Ephraim and the warhorses from Jerusalem, and the battle bow will be broken. He will proclaim peace to the nations. His rule will extend from sea to sea and from the River to the ends of the earth...The Lord will be king over the whole earth.
When this King comes, he will rule the whole earth, bringing peace into our homes, neighborhoods, villages, cities, states, countries, and world. There will no more violence, chaos, and destruction. There will only be peace. There will not be one place on earth where his peace does not flow. He will be King over the whole earth.
The Bible says this King who is come to bring peace to the world will be born in Bethlehem.
But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel...He will stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the LORD, in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God. And they will live securely, for then his greatness will reach to the ends of the earth.
And he will be their peace.
And what is this King to be named who will establish eternal peace all over the world?
Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God.You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”
Jesus, the King of Peace, was born.
“And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
To a group of shepherds, a heavenly host appeared with the angel Gabriel and began praising God saying,
“Glory to God in the highest heaven, AND ON EARTH PEACE
to those on whom his favor rests.”
Jesus came to bring peace on earth to the people of the world. But he was rejected as King (John 19). He was crucified and buried, just as the Bible said he would be (Isaiah 53). Yet he arose, as the Bible said he would (Acts 2-7), and will one day return to usher in his Kingdom of Peace (Acts 1:3-11), just as the prophets (Isaiah, Zechariah, Micah, and the other prophets) said he would (Acts 3:21).
Will there ever be peace on earth? Yes!
Jesus is coming back. He is returning as King to bring peace to the world. His favor, his grace will rest upon us and in us.
The purpose of his delay is so that more and more people will come to know him personally. 2 Peter 3:8-9 says,
But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.
Our Lord is such a loving God...such a kind God...such a good God. He wants all to experience eternal life in his Kingdom of Peace. That is why he delays his coming.
God calls his Kingdom of Peace the new earth. He has promised the new earth will come.
But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells.
(2 Peter 3:13)
How do we experience eternal life in his Kingdom? Repentance.
Repentance is our response to his love, compassion, goodness, and kindness for us (Romans 2:4). Repentance is when people become aware of God’s love, compassion, goodness, and kindness, admit their sin, and accept, through faith, Jesus and what he has done for them through his death, burial, and resurrection.
Jesus died for our sins as Savior. Through faith in Jesus, we receive his forgiveness. Through his resurrection, we receive his life...eternal life.
One day, Jesus will return as King...the King of Peace...world peace. He will usher in the new earth where there will be no more pain and heartache...there will only be peace. Revelation 21:1-5 says,
Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea.I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God.‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”
He wants you to live on the new earth. He wants you to enjoy the new earth. He loves you and he has made it possible for you to live eternally on the new earth through faith in Jesus.
If you have never come to faith in Jesus, or you are not sure if you have come to faith in Jesus, you can do that today. Below is a simply prayer to express your faith in Jesus and experience life in his Kingdom of Peace.
Dear God, you are such a loving, compassionate, good, and kind God. You desire for me to live forever on the new earth, your Kingdom of Peace where there is no more death, crying, mourning, or pain. That is my desire, too! Because you love me so deeply, through Jesus’ death for all my sins, and his resurrection from the dead, you have made it possible for me to live forever on the new earth. Right now, I accept what Jesus did for me through his death in dying for all my sins. I accept your forgiveness. I am fully and forever forgiven. I am a person whom Jesus now lives by his Spirit. I believe Jesus arose from the dead and will one day return to make everything new...to establish his eternal Kingdom of Peace. Thank you God for eternal life in your Kingdom of Peace that you have freely given to me through Jesus.
Some of Jesus last words before leaving earth were, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid (John 14:27).” He also said, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world (John 16:33).”
There is much happening in the world today. Violence, destruction, and death fill our newspaper headlines and television news stories. Fear fills the hearts and minds of most people. But don’t allow yourself to be discouraged. Don’t allow yourself to be afraid. Jesus overcame the world. Take peace in him.
Your longing for peace will be fulfilled. Jesus is coming back to establish God’s Kingdom of Peace. There will be peace on earth...eternal peace all over the earth!
