1 John 1:9

So What Do We Do When We Sin?

1 John #8 (2:1-2)
So What Do We Do When We Sin?

When teaching about the full forgiveness of our sins through Jesus, where we no longer spend our lives confessing our sins for forgiveness, but rather claiming that we are forgiven eternally through faith in Jesus, I am asked:

“So what do you do when you sin?”

This question is proof the good news of God’s grace is being taught, and it is a great question to ask the one teaching the full forgiveness of sins.

More than likely, it was a question asked to John on numerous occasions, which is why he answers the question in 1 John 2:1-2.

Clearing Up The Confusion About 1 John 1:9

The verse most Bible teachers refer to when teaching people to “stay in fellowship with God bykeeping short accounts on their sins” is 1 John 1:9. 1 John 1:9 says:

If we confess our sins he isfaithful and just to forgive us of our sins
and cleanse usfrom all unrighteousness.”

This was the verse that was emphasized to me more than any other verse in the Bible by those who communicated thereligious system I had come to embrace. At this point in my life, I did not realize I needed to comparemen’s words with God’s word.

1 John 1:9 And The Lord's Prayer In Light Of The New Covenant

According to Jesus, his death and resurrection ushered in the New Covenant of Grace. With the New Covenant of Grace, complete forgiveness was ushered in (Matthew 26:27 and Luke 22:20). Under the Old Covenant of Law, forgiveness was conditional. Conditional forgiveness was God forgiving us based upon our forgiveness of others. Complete forgiveness is God forgiving us of all our sins because Jesus died for all our sins. Through faith, we receive his complete forgiveness. Colossians 2:14 says “He (God) forgave us all our sins

MY CONVERSATION WITH FRANK ABOUT 1 JOHN 1:9

Frank had been to my church on several occasions and wanted to talk further about my understanding of forgiveness. From the times he had heard me teach on forgiveness, he had come to understand that my view about forgiveness when people come to faith in Jesus is they are completely forgiven forever of all their sins never having to ask God to forgive them again. Through faith in Jesus, they can rest in the fullness of his forgiveness. His understanding about my view was correct. Now, he was seeking clarification on my view of forgiveness, especially 1 John 1:9.
