For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil
in the heavenly realms.
We all know we are in daily battles. We fight these battles every day. They are real. However, we must identify who the real enemies are in these battles if we are to fight successfully and emerge from them victoriously.
So often in life, we feel like our battles are against others with whom we have relationships. We feel like we are battling our mates, our children, people in our churches, our places of employment, etc... But our real battle is not against other people, flesh and blood, but against the schemes of the devil, his powers of the dark world, and his spiritual forces. Together, their goal is to destroy our relationships and our lives.
Sometimes it feels like we are battling with ourselves. We battle addictions, anger, depression, anxiety, and our self-worth. However, again, our real battle is not with ourselves, as real as it may seem. Again, our real battle is with the devil himself along with his powers of the dark world and against his spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
What makes this battle difficult and so deceptive is that we are fighting a battle against unseen enemies. We can see the people in front of us who are difficult to get along with, who are causing problems in our families, churches, places of employment, and organizations that we are a part. Therefore, since we can see them, we conclude they must be the enemies. But they are not. The devil, the powers of the dark world, and the spiritual forces of evil are our real enemies.
We can see ourselves. We know our thoughts. We know our habits. We know our temptations. We know our addictions. It is easy to conclude that we are own enemy. People will even tell us, "You are your own worse enemy." Therefore, again, it is easy to conclude that we ourselves are the enemy we battle. But again, our real enemy is not even ourselves, it is the devil, his powers of the dark world, and his spiritual forces of evil. Together, they are opposed to every good work God wants to do in and through us. Their goal is to defeat and destroy our relationships, and ultimate each one of us personally.
But take heart, God's love and grace revealed to us in Jesus and made known to us by the Spirit of Jesus in us are more powerful than any scheme of the devil and more powerful than any of his dark and spiritual forces.
In my previous comments on Ephesians 6:10-11, we discovered from Ephesians 1-5 that the power we need to take our stand against the devil's schemes is the power of God's love and grace revealed to us by the Spirit of Christ in us. This revelation of God's love and grace is the very strength within us empowering us to take our stand against the devil's strategies to defeat and destroy us.
Today, concentrate on God's love and grace that he has fully, freely, and forever given to you in Jesus, and watch yourself become empowered to take your stand against the devil's schemes.
May the love of God our Father, the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the companionship of the Holy Spirit be with you today.
