Many people are told by their Pastor that if they want to grow in their relationship with God, they should join a "serve team" and a small group.
Yet the emptiness continues in their hearts.
They wonder why they aren't growing.
They wonder what is wrong.
The problem is not with them.
The problem is not one of serving and joining.
The problem is one of a lack of learning and understanding the transforming truths of grace from their Pastor.
Take a close look at Colossians 1:3-8 and see what happens in the life of a person who is clearly taught the truths of grace.
"We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all God’s people— the faith and love that spring from the hope stored up for you in heaven and about which you have already heard in the true message of the gospel that has come to you. In the same way, the gospel is bearing fruit and growing throughout the whole world—just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and truly understood God’s grace. You learned it from Epaphras, our dear fellow servant, who is a faithful minister of Christ on our behalf, and who also told us of your love in the Spirit."
The gospel is the good news of God's grace.
Grace is everything God has done for us in Christ to forgive our sins, make us righteous and holy, create peace between himself and each of us, free us from the law, and reconcile us to himself in a love relationship where we call him "Abba Father' (my Daddy who loves me!) and he calls us his dearly loved children.
Faith receives what God has freely and fully done for us in Christ.
Faith rests in what Christ has done.
Faith receives and rests in grace.
The Colossians learned the transforming truths of grace from Epaphras.
When they understood the truths of grace, their lives were transformed.
Hope was birthed within them
Love flowed from within them.
Fruit was produced within them.
Growth happened within them.
This life-change did not come from joining a serve team or small group.
This life-change was produced within them when a faithful minister of Christ, Epaphras, took the time to clearly explain to them the truths of the gospel of grace.
He did not tell them to join a serve team or small group if they wanted to grow in their relationship with God.
He simply taught them the truths of grace and their lives were transformed.
