Philippians

What Does It Mean To Worship By The Spirit?

Finally, my brothers, rejoice in the Lord. It is no trouble for me to write the same things to you again, and it is a safeguard for you. Watch out for those dogs, those workers of evil, those mutilators of the flesh! For it is we who are the circumcision, we who worship by the Spirit of God, who glory in Christ Jesus, and who put no confidence in the flesh.”
Philippians 3:1-3

So often when people comment on the meaning of a verse, or apply a verse to their lives, they do so without first determining the author’s original meaning of the verse.

The Grace Of Our Lord Jesus Be With Your Spirit: Paul’s Meaningful Conclusion To His Letter To The Philippian Church

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.”
Philippians 4:23
Paul, The Apostle of Grace

Paul could have concluded his letter to the Philippians any way he chose...with any words he chose. Yet he chose to end his letter, as he does most of his letters, emphasizing the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the Philippian believers experience of grace.

Paul did not choose to close his letter this way because it was a nice way to close the letter. No, he chose to conclude his letter this way because the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ had completely changed his life (1 Corinthians 15:10; 1 Timothy 1:12-17), and his assignment in life was to communicate grace to people (Acts 20:24).

God's Grace Penetrates Caesar's Palace

All the saints send you greetings, especially those from the household of Caesar.”
Philippians 4:22
Paul, The Apostle of Grace

The name Caesar was the title given to the Roman Emperor who ruled the Roman Empire. The Roman Empire was the greatest power on earth and Caesar was the most powerful person on earth when Paul wrote his letter (AD 61) to the Philippian people while imprisoned in Rome. During Paul’s imprisonment, the Caesar was Nero.

In his letter to the Philippians, Paul says the saints from Caesar’s household sent their greetings to the Philippians.

For Me To Live Is Christ

"Yes, and I will continue to rejoice, for I know that through your prayers and God’s provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ what has happened to me will turn out for my deliverance. I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose?

Christ's Affection And Compassion For You

"Therefore if you have any encouragement in Christ, if any comfort from His love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any affection and compassion, then make my joy complete by being of one mind, having the same love, being united in spirit and purpose. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or empty pride, but in humility consider others more important than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others."
Philippians 2:1-4
Paul, The Apostle of Grace

Having The Same Love Of Jesus

"...then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love,
being one in spirit and of one mind."
Philippians 2:2
Paul, The Apostle of Grace

The Philippian church was established during Paul's second missionary journey (AD 51) when he shared the good news of God's grace with Lydia and her household by the riverside (Acts 16:13-15).

Now, about 10 years later, Paul writes to the church to encourage them to be united as one family as they shine the good news of God's grace into the darkness of Philippi.

Breaking Free From The Me-First Mentality

"Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, existing in the form of God, did not consider equality with God something to cling to, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to death—even death on a cross. Therefor...e God exalted Him to the highest place, and gave Him the name above all names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father

Saints: One of Paul’s Favorite Words!

"Greet all the saints in Christ Jesus. The brothers who are with me send you greetings."
Philippians 4:21
Paul, the Apostle of Grace

As we know from Paul’s letters, one of his favorite words was grace...and rightly so. Jesus, himself, introduced Paul to the word grace, impacting his life forever. But did you know that another favorite word of Paul is the word saints? It has something to do with Jesus too!

When writing letters to the churches, Paul often addressed his letters in this way: “To the saints in…” Then, throughout the letters, he referred to believers in Jesus as saints.

God's Grace Reveals How Great God Is

"Now to our God and Father be glory forever and ever.Amen."
Philippians 4:20
Paul, the Apostle of Grace

The word glory means to gaze upon the greatness of God...to stand in awe of how great God is. For all eternity we we will gaze upon God and be in awe of his greatness. We will forever be saying, “Look at how great God is!”

But why?

Why will we be gazing upon the greatness of God for all eternity?

Why will we say, "Look at how great God is!"?

One word - Grace!

2 Timothy 1:9 says God gave us grace in Christ before time began.

Grace-Based Giving

Now I rejoice greatly in the Lord that at last you have revived your concern for me. You were indeed concerned, but you had no opportunity to show it. I am not saying this out of need, for I have learned to be content regardless of my circumstances.I know how to live humbly, and I know how to abound. I am accustomed to any and every situation—to being filled and being hungry, to having plenty and having need. I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength. Nevertheless, you have done well to share in my affliction.
